Excursions for Forum guests

Tomsk is one of the oldest cities in Siberia! It is 414 years old and throughout its history it experienced the outstanding rises and periods of stagnation. It was the capital of a huge governorate and became the first city in the Asian part of the Russian Empire where a university was established.

Nowadays Tomsk is one of the leading educational centers of Russia, the city of innovative enterprises, the city full of youth, energy and culture.

The excursion will present the main Tomsk sights and places worth seeing. The Forum guests will have an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the city and to trace its development from the past to towards the future.

The local history expert Ekaterina Kirsanova will tell you about great stories, amazing people, the past and the present of Tomsk.

1. Voskresenskaya Gora (The Resurrection Hill)

All sightseeing tours usually start from this place, which is quite reasonable. Voskresenskaya Gora is the place where Tomsk was founded. The first fortress was built exactly here and later it was surrounded by new outskirts, bazaars and municipal councils. This place keeps a lot of legends, facts, curious stories and funny and impressive monuments. The picturesque city view from this place allows seeing how the city was growing and how it being developed at present.

2. Naberezhnaya reki Tom in the Governor’s quarter (Tom River Embankment)

This is one of the most favorite walking places for Tomsk citizens. The amazing view on the opposite bank of the river, funny Chekhov monument, legendary restaurant and the flashbacks to the merchant history of Tomsk – all these can be found here, at the place of former Bazaar square which is now called the Gubernatorsky kvartal (the Governor’s Quarter).

3. Novo-sobornaya ploshchad (Novosobornaya Square)

The Novosobornaya Square was established on the Yurtochnaya Hill in the 30s of 19th century as an administrative center of the city. All major events throughout several generations were held here. This was the place where the great Trinity Cathedral was built, where the political demonstrations and manifestations were held during Russian revolutions. Nowadays this is the place for all mass cultural events for Tomsk citizens.

4.  Wooden beauty

Tomsk is famous for its unique wooden architecture. During the excursion the Forum guests will see famous wooden chambers and palaces and the renovated Kuznetsova Street. They will find out how people live in a wooden house at the beginning of 21st century.

5. University quarter and the history of Tomsk Technological Institute of Emperor Nicholas II (now TPU).

At the beginning of 20th century the citizens and even the architects called this part of Sadovaya Street (now it is the Lenin Avenue) as “the corner of Saint Petersburg” because the architecture looked very similar to the architecture of the northern capital of Russia. In order to place the institute buildings like they are placed now the authorities had to buy land from local merchants and change the landscape of the city. A lot of great inventions were created here: the first Siberian plane, magnetic-levitation train system and even Tomsk television. The history of TPU is the history of Tomsk from the time of the last Russian tzar, across the first Russian Revolution and the Great Patriotic War to the present time.

6.   Lagerny Sad (Lagerny Garden)

Lagerny Garden is a very remarkable place for Tomsk students. This is the place where they date, meet with friends, do some workouts, feed squirrels and enjoy the amazing Siberian nature. Moreover, this place is also characterized by its great history: the history of musketeers’ regiments, dances to the tunes of musical-regimental band, camps for primitive people and the monument of the Great Victory!
